Armenian Blot online: what Bazar Blot actually is
Blot is the Armenian member of the Belote family, and for most players in Armenia it means one specific game: Bazar Blot, four players in two teams, 32 cards, with a bidding round before every deal.
It is close enough to French Belote that the tricks feel familiar, and different enough in bidding, declarations and scoring that a French-rules app will not feel right to someone who grew up with it. Belote Club implements both, separately.
The shape of a game
- Four players, two teams, partners sitting opposite each other
- A 32-card deck — 7 through ace in four suits
- Eight cards each, then a bidding round that sets the contract and the trump
- Eight tricks, then the deal is scored and the next dealer moves on
- First team to 101 wins the match
The words at the table
Armenian blot keeps its own vocabulary, most of it shared with the Russian and Turkish branches of the game rather than the French one.
- Bazar — the bidding round the game is named after; you raise until nobody outbids you
- Kozir — trump. The jack and nine of trump outrank the ace, which is why a weak-looking hand can be strong
- Mast — a suit, and by extension a trick
- Terz — a run of consecutive cards in one suit, declared for extra points
- Belote / rebelote — the king and queen of trump in one hand, worth 20
- Kapot — taking all eight tricks
- Der — the last trick, worth 10 on top of the card points
Where it differs from French Belote
- Bidding is a point ladder starting at 8 and rising by 1, not an 80–160 auction
- Scores are divided by ten and rounded, so a match runs to 101 rather than 501 or 701
- Four-of-a-kind values differ: the Armenian nine is worth 140 and the ace 110, where Coinche gives 150 and 100
- No-trump contracts push the ace to 19 points and its four-of-a-kind to 190
- A failed contract hands everything to the other side, including declarations
